Having a month supply of food storage is simpler than you might think. It’s known as a food storage starter kit. In one box (19 x 13 x 7.5) you can put 6 cans of food that will make 90 meals. The 6 cans are a bit bigger than a typical can and are called #10 (number ten) cans. In each can is a basic food staple. This preppers food storage will not create gourmet meals but they will provide vital substance in times of hardship. The starter kit can be used just as the name suggests, to start building your food storage pantry. It can also be use like insurance just in case you may one day need it.
Food Storage Starter Kit
What are the requirements to make it on the Best Canned Goods list:
-that the food lasts 20+ years so you don’t need to replace it every two to five years like most canned goods. This is possible because the food is dehydrated or freeze dried and sealed.
-it takes up a small amount of space.
-its affordable. Less than $.76 per serving is ideal for food that will last for 20+ years.
Best Canned Goods for a Food Storage Starter Kit
Below is a list of the best canned goods for a food storage starter kit. These food staples range from 21 to 51 serving per can, averaging 37 per can. The cost for the first six items on the list ranges from $10 – $16 through Amazon or Walmart. Each person and/or family’s tastes vary vastly. The top six are in my starter kit (my husband and I each have a box) but there are other options that may be a better fit for you. Eventually, I added one more box that had the remaining six items. My church has another example of a starter kit which includes: Oats, Rice, Beans, White Flour, (2) Wheat Flour. My kit is different because of my gluten free diet. The list below are gluten free foods all except 4 & 7. I haven’t found a supplier that will sell gluten free flour and pasta in #10 cans so I purchase these at natural food stores.
