Women on Adventures

Do you ever struggle with finding the next good read?  There are so many extraordinary books but finding them can be a struggle. Especially, if you’re trying to find nonfiction women on adventures or women survivors. In honor of March’s National Women’s History Month, here’s a list of five-star books about female adventurers, survivors, and boundary breakers.

Women on Adventures

  1. Heroes for My Daughter… This book has captured my heart and is my favorite all-time read. It’s written by the New York Times bestselling author – Brad Meltzer.  The book is all about different individuals (mostly women) who made this world a better place. These individuals are artists, inventors, scientists, and philanthropists who changed the course of our world and inspired millions of people in our society. My favorite part of this book is the heartfelt comments he makes to his daughter throughout the book.

  2. Grandma Gatewood’s Walk… This grandma is an adventurer, survivor, and a breaker of boundaries. I love this story for so many reasons. First, it is an inspiration to all, young and old. Second, it is beautifully written with meticulous detail. It shows the determination of an old woman who proves anything is possible in life. She became the first person who walked 800 miles along the 2,050 mile Appalachian Trail.

  3. A Long Trek Home- 4,000 Miles By Boot, Raft, and Ski… This story is about married adventurers, Erin & Hig, and their backpacking expedition from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands. I enjoyed reading about their journey and picking up survival, rafting, and hiking tips.

  4. Heaven Is Here… Survival is not about hanging out in the woods, it’s a mindset. Stephanie Nielson showed us how even after the most tragic accidents, you could survive with the help of family, faith, love, and community to live a joyous life again. This story is about tragedy, surviving, hope, triumph, and joy. It shows that, when it comes to life and happiness, it is all about perspective.

  5. Hiding Place… This is an outstanding book with thousands of positive reviews and A++ ratings. The setting is World War II when brave sisters rebel against the evil of the Nazis and help Jews to freedom. This story shows how they were betrayed, captured, and survived unthinkable circumstances through faith. It’s a remarkable story about a brave family.

  6. Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust… This book deserves more than five stars. It is all about the best and the worst of humanity, where forgiveness wins. It is amazing what people can survive using belief, faith, and prayer.

  7. Legends… This book is a compilation of one-page essays written by women about influential women. These influential women include familiar names such as Lucille Ball, Oprah Winfrey, Mother Teresa, Amelia Earhart, and Harriet Tubman. However, many of the women were unfamiliar to me, so I enjoyed getting to know these fifty powerhouse females. If you don’t feel like you have a lot of time to read than this is a great option.

In all seven books listed above, I fell in love with these unforgettable women. Each story has transformed my view of the world and my belief that I can be an influence for good. It has compelled me to dig deeper and live happier. Below is a list of more five-star stories of incredible women worth checking out. However, they made the B list because I didn’t personally connect with the female protagonist but I did find the stories interesting and inspiring.

8. Tracks: One Woman’s Journey Across 1,700 Miles of Australian Outback

9. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

10. West with the Night: A Memoir by Beryl Markham (pilot, adventurer, and racehorse trainer)
