Prepper Library

Prepper Library

One of the most important preps you can have are books.  They are a vital source of entertainment and education.  Without the written word it is difficult to progress as a society.  Isaac Newton said it best, “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.”  He was referring to studying the work of earlier innovators and building off their ideas.  Luckily for me, I live in a time where I can benefit freely from the giants of the past.  Being a prepper, there are so many skills I wish to learn, and we are living in an age where information is free.   You had better believe that I am building a prepper library and preparing for a time when books may not be as readily available as it is today.

Off-grid Kindle Books

When building my Prepper library, I follow the Prepper code of having a backup method for any prep, even collecting books.  As the saying goes, “Two is one and one is none”.  Not only do I collect a hard copy of books that will be a good prepper resource but I also collect eBooks.  There are many methods for getting free books to build your Prepper’s library.  Below is a list of the top four places I get free books:

  1. Amazon – I get most of my free ebooks by typing into Amazon’s search bar “free kindle books nonfiction”.  If there is a skill I would like to someday learn, like raising chickens, I search more specifically (“free kindle books chickens“.)   I have the old Kindle Keyboard 3G + Wi-Fi.   I like the older version with the keyboard for my preps because I’ve had touch screens go bad after a couple of years whereas I’ve had my Kindle keyboard for about four years and it still works great.  With my Kindle I can store hundreds of books, store PDFs on it, it weighs only 8.7 oz,  and a single charge lasts for up to two months with the wireless turned off.
  2. Internet Searches – Google search “Prepper PDF Library”.  Prepper and Survivalist Bloggers share free PDF books they find that would be of interest to their readers like Army Ranger Handbook.  I can email PDF’s to my Kindle, save them to my computer, and/or print them out to add to my home library.   Here are some of the best websites to get free PDFs:  ready4itall.orgthesurvivalistblog.net, and prepperwebsite.com.
  3. Yard/Garage Sales – I volunteered for an organization that collected books for countries where books were scarce.  One of the best places I was able to get books is at garage/yard sales because they don’t sell so people are happy if you will take them off their hands.  This saves them garage space and the time and hassle of packing them back up.
  4. Library or Used Book Store – Many libraries and used book stores have a designated box or area with a sign that reads “FREE Books”.
